Why do I need this medicine?
Fusidic acid is an antibiotic. It is used on its own or together with other medicines to treat infections of the bone, lungs, blood, heart tissue, skin, and wounds.

This medicine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Fusidic acid exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take this medicine on an empty stomach. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Fusidic acid is available as a tablet or oral suspension. Do not change from one drug form to another without consulting your doctor first.

If you are taking the tablet, swallow it whole with a glass of water.

If you are taking the oral suspension, shake the bottle well before you take the medicine to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type or severity of your infection and your response to the medication.

Take Fusidic acid at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take Fusidic acid if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or its salt forms, such as sodium fusidate.

Do not take Fusidic acid with certain cholesterol-lowering medicines, such as atorvastatin.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • impaired transport or breakdown of bilirubin (yellowish pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells)
  • condition that affects the bile ducts e.g. blockage or problems in the bile ducts
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Fusidic acid to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Routine tests (e.g. liver function) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring of signs or symptoms of skin reactions may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Fusidic acid may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain or discomfort, indigestion, headache, and drowsiness.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth or eyes accompanied by fever
  • rashes, fever, tender or enlarged lymph nodes, swelling of the face
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles
  • persistent muscle or joint pain, muscle cramps, weakness or numbness
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Fusidic acid with certain cholesterol-lowering medicines such as atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, or simvastatin.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir, saquinavir
  • certain blood-thinning medicines e.g. warfarin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Fusidic acid.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
